Selling Prints on Etsy or Amazon? What Sizes to Sell

Posted on July, 8, 2024

When selling photographic prints as artwork we think there are certain sizes that make the most sense. In this video we go over what they are and what size you might want to start with when designing your artwork.

What Sizes to Sell

We think the best sizes to sell are the sizes that are easiest to find frames for. These are 8x10, 11x14 and 16x20. For larger than 16x20 we would go with 24x30 as it is the same proportion as 8x10 and 16x20 (and 11x14 though it is slightly different).

What Size to Start With

When designing your artwork we recommend starting with a 12x15 at 300ppi. While we don't recommend selling this size, it is a good size to start with as it can easily be used to make an 8x10, 11x14, 16x20, and 24x30. You could certainly start with 11x14 @ 300ppi but 12x15 gives you a bit more resolution to work with when doing larger prints.

Some Tips on Sizes and File Resolution

  • For prints up to 12x18 we recommend a resolution of 300ppi.
  • For prints larger than 12x18 we recommend a resolution of 150ppi.

Why the difference? Generally speaking the larger the print the further away people will be from it. This means that the resolution can be lower and still look good. Also, the printers we use are different for the larger prints and they are better able to handle lower res files.

It is ok to have more resolution than needed - so using the same file for all sizes is fine. Just make sure you have enough resolution for the largest size you plan to sell.

The ppi numbers we recommend are the ideal resolutions. You may find that you can get away with lower resolution files, but you may want to do some testing first to determine what works best for you.
